Focus on: 405mm Scroll Saw, from Draper Tools!

New stock from Draper! Introducing the 405mm Scroll Saw with Variable Speed, Flexi-Shaft & work light.

Like most other scroll saws currently on the market:

This ‘new’ Draper version sports a 405mm throat, 50mm depth of cut, tilting table & a benchmark 90W motor (it also takes ‘standard’ size scroll saw blades – the same length as the leading brands). The table size, material & work light also reflect that of the other brands on the market.

Unlike similar brands on the market:

The Draper does have a few unique features, it comes as standard with a Flexible drive shaft that runs off the same motor; these are perfect for sanding the edges of your work & drilling small hole whilst you are working on the timber without the need of a separate tool such as a Dremel.  The handy Flexi-shaft can also run a wide range of multi-tool bits, including grinding discs, abrasives, sanding & polishing, drills etc (available from a wide range of other brands) making this scroll saw an incredibly versatile tool.

Direct Comparison:

So, there are many features on his scroll saw that mirror that of the market leaders & a few stand-out features so we have run a direct comparison to the two other leading brands to see where the Draper fits into the market:

As you can see from our direct comparison, the Draper Scroll Saw mirrors the features of the market leaders in many areas & there is little to separate them. The Record Power SS16V comes out on top with warranty, offering the customer a 5-year & an extra 1mm in table size…. However, this model has been discontinued as of 01/03/2021 so unless you can find the last of their stock, it is between the Charnwood SS16F for us.

The Charnwood machine comes out on top with its extra added features of the foot pedal, mitre fence & a Flexi-drive kit included, but you will pay for this at an extra £15 cost, other than this, the two machines are virtually identical, offering a similar design, Flexi-shaft, slightly different work light, but overall, the same spec. The Draper comes in at a more cost-effective price (as of 03/03/21) & is available from stock, the Charnwood is available to pre-order with an ETA of 01/04/21.

Our verdict:

So, there is not a huge amount to split these three machines, however as above, with the Record Power model now being discontinued, it is a two-horse race between the Charnwood SS16F & the Draper. The Charnwood is packed with added features, at the highest price point, whilst the Draper offers value for money without compromising on spec. If you are looking for an entry-level scroll saw that offers value for money & your decision is somewhat budget-driven, then the Draper Scroll saw is a great buy at its promotional price, but if you’re willing to wait, then for the extra £15, pre-ordering the Charnwood machine will give you some nice added features for your money.
