Native Western Red Cedar has been growing in our country for over 90 years.  Compared to its Canadian counterpart it has a more constant paler colour with varied grain and knots for a more natural look. It is worth considering for it’s smaller carbon footprint as the timber does not need to be shipped half way around the world to the United Kingdom.

In the UK, the tree is planted for timber and shelter. The wood is highly sought after, being one of the most durable in the world. It has an aromatic fragrance which can be retained for long periods of time and it also contains a natural preservative which is resistant to fungal attack. The durable wood is soft and good for construction.

As a basic way of working out overlap you can use a figure of 20%. For a 150mm piece you would generally have a 30mm overlap and so have a 120mm face. To convert M2 to linear metres required take the M2 and divide it by the face showing. For example 1m2 in 150mm featheredge would be 1/.120(allowing 20%overlap) is 8.33m
When working out your quantities made sure you add extra to allow for the trimming of pieces, for lengths not working out and odd pieces. It will never work out exactly and so an allowance needs to be made for the extra required.
Screwing is always advisable with any timber, but cedar is soft enough to pin, although it's advisable to use a nail gun.
