2nd quality bench slat.

Yandles hardwood bench slats in sapele that haven’t made passed our quality controls, but that still have one good face and edge and are perfectly usable. The reasons for being a second include parts that haven’t planed out, deep chipping in grain, individual worm holes(kilned so no insects/worm), bendy(will go flat when fixed down), small knots or small tear out. All will be structurally sound.

Sapele is a medium to dark reddish brown heartwood predominantly from West Africa.  It generally has a more random grain appearance meaning it can be liable to interlocked grain.  Interlocked grain spirals around the centre of the tree thus alternating intermittently and causing a 'rough' effect, this can generally be reduced if not eliminated by heavy sanding.

It is up to you and really depends what look you are after. They will go grey if you leave them and that is a natural barrier and is generally my choice with oak. Otherwise you can vanish/oil them and this will provide extra protection especially from moisture which is the worst thing to cause decay, but it will be an ongoing job with most oils. I have found with tung/danish oil that if left outside over winter as it will start to weather black and then grey in a matter of months and to avoid this it requires constant re coating.

 

 

 

We have recently starting stocking Restol which is able to protect the wood and maintain the oak for several years without a re coat and is proving very popular.

    Fully expected a more “rustic” state of the 2nds quality sapele slats ordered, but was pleasantly surprised by how good they were.
    A quick fine sand and some preserver and a few drilled holes later the bench was looking splendidly!
    Would def. highly recommend! and will use again if ever the need arises.

    Nice bench slats. I bought seconds as the bench is really just for decoration – but the slats were perfectly good. I can’t say the same about the delivery service though. Website says delivered to customer – but the driver had forged my signature and I had to go looking around the neighbourhood for the package. Poor customer service from the delivery company when I complained – hence only three stars!!

    I did some research online before purchasing this item to repair an old garden bench. I wasn’t entirely sure of the quality of what I had ordered never having ordered anything like this before but I need not have worried; it’s absolutely perfect. It now shows up the rest of the bench to be honest but I am very pleased with the quality and finish of this item and would have no qualms about ordering from Yandle’s again if I needed to.
