As Oak dries out over time, it can develop cracks and splits known as shakes. These tiny cracks run along the grain of the wood, which means that they do not affect its structural integrity. This cracking process happens faster in warmer weather, as the sun and wind speed up the drying process and can even cause shakes to form on recently cut green oak. As such, these should not be seen as faults, as it is a natural process. It is possible to reduce cracking in green oak by adding wood oil for protection. One of the main reasons for posts to rot is the constant wetting and drying of the post. To help extend the life of the post, you can slope the soil or concrete the post is set in so that water doesn't gather at the base of the post. Sealing the post with oil at the level it goes in the ground also helps extend the life as it reduces the moisture absorption into the post.

The pegs should be tapered 3/4' to 5/8' and so ideally the hole drilled needs to be between this at 11/16' The peg is then hammered into the hole so that it sticks out evenly either side of the hole. The peg is air dried and so will not change shape, but the beam is green and so will shrink over time tightening on the peg and creating a very strong joint. While it will be tempting to cut off the peg level with beam, it will look odd after a period of time. The beam will shrink over a period of time, whilst the peg doesn't. As the beams will shrink at slightly different rates, the pegs will then stick out again at different lengths and there will not a consistent look to them.

We plane fresh sawn oak( green oak) ex inch. This means we plane it as thick as it will go, ensuring a smooth finish. It means it will be under the size of the original beam, but smooth all over. Generally planing takes 4-6 mm off the thickness of a piece. For this we use a hand plane. There are two main reasons. The first being that fresh sawn oak has tanins which react with metal creating a blue stain which is unsightly. The second is that that beams are heavy and difficult to handle through a thicknesser. Fresh sawn oak tends to get stuck through a thicknesser which creates white marks and even burn marks.

  1. StefanMacDonaldBrown (verified owner)

    Really good and well priced.

  2. TimKeates (verified owner)

Disappointing pegs as machine cut and very dry so fractured easily. Ended up making our own from green oak. Should have done this in the first place as handmade follows the grain!

  3. Simon (verified owner)

Really pleased with these pegs. The taper makes them much easier to use than oak dowels that I had already brought from another supplier. I’ll be back for more for my next project.

  4. DAVIDJOHNSTON (verified owner)

Did exactly what they were purchased for.

  5. JeremyMurfitt (verified owner)

I only needed a small number of pegs for some framing I am doing and this is there second lot I have purchased. Easy process to order and they arrived within 48 hours. Excellent quality.

  6. RuEllingham (verified owner)

Excellent service as always from the team at Yandles. The Oak pegs are well made, strong and will be using them from now on.
